Dr. Powers and staff are here to build relationships with our patients to support their dental journey.
We feel a smile can be forever. Dental costs vary by procedures and we will do our best to make sure
you are aware of your proposed treatment plan prior to scheduling appointments. Our fees are the
same whether you choose to be a cash patient or prefer us to submit an insurance claim in your behalf.
As a courtesy to our patients, we do our very best to maximize dental benefits. We will process any
insurance claims, receive and post payments from your insurance company to your account and collect
your copay or deductible at the time of your dental service. With this being said, many employers offer
various degrees of coverage. Better insurance plans allow higher payments and offer broader coverage
on dental services. Most insurance plans have maximums, deductibles and copays on the dental services
that are paid. There are also the terms “In” and “Out” of network which indicate if you are required to
use a dental facility that utilizes the insurance carrier’s “Fee Schedules”. This is not the doctor’s fees, but
a schedule that is designed by that insurance company. The dentist, the employer nor the patient have
any control over this, only the insurance company. Some have not raised their “fee schedules” for many
years so therefore are not up to date with allowing coverage for modern dental services.
Dr. John Powers and Dr. Mary Alexander do participate as “In” network providers for Delta Dental
Premier and Dr. Alexander also participates in United Concordia’s network. This means the doctor’s fee
for dental service does not change, however the payment from your insurance carrier may require
provider adjustments be taken from the doctor’s normal fee schedule once a claim is paid. We do not
work with any Dental Health Maintenance Organization plans (DHMO). There are some carriers, mostly
CareFirst and BCBS, which will not pay an “out of network” dentist. Therefore the patient pays for their
services on the day of treatment. Our staff will gladly submit your insurance claim and your insurance
carrier will reimburse you directly.
Please make yourself aware of the type of dental coverages your employer offers. Due to the Privacy Act
it may not be easy for our staff to get specifics on your dental benefits that match your recommended
treatment plan. We will always do our best to access what information your employer makes available.
It would be in your best interest to provide us with your detailed coverage that you can get as the
employee or covered individual. We also offer to send preauthorization to your insurance carrier prior
to any major dental treatment. This takes approximately 3 weeks to get back the details of payments
they will allow.
Not everyone can afford or choose to work with dental insurance. Others may just need an extra helping
hand to complete needed treatment. None of us have a money tree to shake, but we do offer other
helpful payment options. Ask us about our “Share A Smile” program that benefits you as well as the new
patient you refer to our office. We will also extend the doctor’s courtesy to use Care Credit in our office.
Care Credit has been around for a long time and can be used at many professional offices, even for your
pet at the veterinarian. Look for these on our website: www.johnpowersdmd.com. Our staff will also be
happy to explain these programs. Our payment options also include cash, check, credit cards, FSA or HSA
cards. We do have an online payment option as well though our Patient Connect. Please know, we
want you to be involved in your dental journey and help choose the pace which is in your best interest.
Our caring and well-educated staff is at your service to help you achieve your overall wellness.
